On June 20, 2001:
Andrea filled the tub with water and beginning with Paul, she systematically drowned the three youngest boys, then placed them on her bed and covered them. Mary was left floating in the tub. The last child alive was the first born, seven-year-old Noah. He asked his mother what was wrong with Mary, then turned and ran away. Andrea caught up with him and as he screamed, she dragged him and forced him into the tub next to Mary's floating body. He fought desperately, coming up for air twice, but Andrea held him down until he was dead. Leaving Noah in the tub, she brought Mary to the bed and laid her in the arms of her brothers.
And this woman, who systematically hunted down and murdered her 5 children, has just been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Shame on a system that would allow such a supreme travesty of justice.
Shame on her husband Rusty, who ignored all the warning signs, exposing his children to a mortal threat who then disgraced their memory by sympathetically supporting her in court.
Shame on a society which so callously writes off such a brutal act without calling for accountability from the perpetrator.
Whenever I think about the over-arching fear that would have been coursing through little Noah's mind as he struggled for his life, with his murderous mother's face being the last earthly thing he saw through a suffocating blanket of water, I feel the urge to set aside my usual respect for the sanctity of life and drive a knife straight through her cold, dead heart.
